Julien Ceder
Designing Champagne
Julien Ceder is the first full time art director and designer for Veuve Clicquot. A creative and talented mind, he is in charge of defining the brand’s international corporate identity, a position with many varied responsibilities such as running photo shoot, creating pictures and objects, decorating bars, boutiques and any other place where Veuve Clicquot holds social events. He works mostly in Reims, the world capital of champagne. Where else could he find inspiration?
How do you fight the artist’s block?Designers spend time in art galleries. So do I, but not so much: exhibitions can breed creativity, but they can also prevent me from having unseen ideas. When I’m in search of ideas, I prefer to play guitar and drums or to paint. Nature is also a good source of inspiration, and I like to go for a walk in the countryside. Besides my brain is like a sponge, absorbing as many information as I can from what is happening around me.What are the artistic constraints of working as a designer for such a prestigious brand? The good thing with Veuve Clicquot is that it has its own touch of madness. This allows me to go beyond my own limits and to be as extravagant as I want in my work. I have to be very careful when I choose the materials, for instance: some don’t fit with the brand’s upscale public image. The printing process is also very delicate: Veuve Clicquot’s famous yellow must be spotless, and always sublime. But I have a lot of fun doing it!What is your favorite creation for Veuve Clicquot?A few years ago I was asked to work on the visual identity of Veuve Clicquot Cave privée, which is the brand’s vintage years. Former labels were dreadful, with too much gold and tangled arabesques. I designed a brand new label. I distorted the shape of the label, and I had it completely reworked, based on the yellow ribbon-shaped bottle-holder, another of my works for Veuve Clicquot. Rethinking a visual identity is very exciting, because every Veuve Clicquot lover will see it wherever he drinks champagne. It boosted the sales, and feedbacks from all over the world were very positive and stimulating. I’m really proud of having contributed to it.

Richard Juhlin
Bubbles in his head
Richard Juhlin is a gifted man: his ability to remember each and every specific scent in champagnes is truly exceptional. And he has tasted more bubblies than anyone could dream of. Ever since champagne took the major part of his life in the 1990s he has published several books about it, including ‘The Champagne Guide’ in 2008, and ‘The Scent of Champagne‘ in 2012. And he was lucky enough to taste bottles of 1840s Veuve Clicquot found in a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea in July 2010. Over a chilled glass of champagne, he discusses his love for bubbles – and Veuve Clicquot.
How did you happen to be interested in champagne? When I was a kid travelling with my father he taught me a lot about the qualities of German wines. Coincidentally my first champagne was a Veuve Clicquot, when I was 7 or 8: I loved its bubbles and the feeling they gave. Years later with a friend we planned to bring a bottle of champagne to a party. Drinking it was almost a religious experience, I said to myself ‘I want to know everything about this’, and I did not even go to the party! Instead I went to Champagne, bought up a few bottles, and read every book about them. It all started from that.

Pablo Reinoso
Seating artist
On the second floor of Hotel du Marc, Veuve Clicquot's splendid mansion in Reims, an astonishing seat occupies one side of the corridor. The Spaghetti Bench, as it is precisely called, is a work by Pablo Reinoso, a talented French-Argentine artist-designer, whose imaginative world is partly the product of his dual heritage. He has a long story of creations for Veuve Clicquot, ice buckets, services and bottle accessories. He discusses his interests for benches and the Clicquot spirit, and the ambiguous importance of humor in his work.
What’s the idea behind the Spaghetti Bench?Seats, chairs or benches are usually not appealing to sculptors. I am an exception! I created my first chair at the age of seven, in my grandfather’s workshop–he was a carpenter. As time went by, this object was a recurring theme in my life, and I collected and questioned it endlessly. So a great deal of my creations is related to it, particularly since the 2000s.

Pierre Geronimi
Starred ice creams
Corsica, known as the ‘Scented isle’, is famous for the unique fragrance produced by the flowers and trees of its dense ‘maquis’, French for Mediterranean shrubbery. No surprise then that Corsican-born Pierre Geronimi has created savory ice creams since he was 13. Obsessed with flavors he froze such weird things as myrtle, nougat, Israeli dates, candied oranges and almonds. Barack Obama himself had the chance to taste his sorbet made of yoghurt and Tonka beans. Last summer Veuve Clicquot challenged him to pair a sorbet with a Grand Cru. Guess what? He won.
What’s the secret behind your breathtaking flavors?I won’t tell you! I will just say that some of my friends, who teach physics and chemistry, explained me how cooking affected components. Heat nurtures flavors, for instance, and a thermal shock such as freezing fixes them. And I have always been fascinated by another friend, an oenologist, when he talks about wines with such words as tannin, color, spices, nose, nutlike or sherry-like aromas...
